Resources for student veterans and their supporters

Do you need to better understand your benefits as a student veteran? Do you want information on taking care of your emotional health as you transition into college life? Or maybe you just need to connect with other veterans on your campus? These resources can you help you do all those things and more.

Disabled American Veterans. A non-profit charity that offers community outreach services and advocacy for disabled veterans.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. Founded in 2004, this non-profit organization is dedicated to helping Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families. As a member, you get access to their social network. You can connect with other veterans and get information on local events. They have an extensive list of resources here, a blog and tons of information.

Marine Parents. A charity organization that provides support and education to families of Marines. They share accurate information about Marines and give emotional and spiritual support to Marines and their families. They offer live and email support, message boards and chat rooms.

National Resource Directory. In partnership with the Departments of Defense, Labor and Veteran’s Affairs, this comprehensive Web site provides access to a variety of services at the local, state and national levels for veterans and ill and injured service people and their families. You’ll find information on benefits, education, employment, health and more.

National Veterans Foundation. The only toll-free crisis and referral hotline for veterans, staffed by specially trained veterans and counselors. You can call this number to talk about whatever services you may need.

Half of Us. Features a list of resources for veterans, their families and individuals wanting to support veterans. You’ll also find a number of videos where veterans share their experiences about returning.

SAMHSA Veteran Resources. The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration has a list of resources for veterans and families, including links on mental health and trauma.

Student Veterans of America. An alliance of student veteran groups on college campuses that connects groups with resources and advocates on behalf of veteran students. Has information on scholarships, internships, employment and more.

The American Legion. The largest service organization that offers various local programs, numerous scholarships, a national emergency fund and other services to support troops.

United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Provides veterans with benefits and services. Their Web site includes a wealth of information such as a directory of VAs across the U.S., help for PTSD, descriptions of VA benefits and facts on healthcare. Also includes a blog, which features relevant news and updates. Here, you can find out the specifics about the post 9/11 GI Bill (and other benefits), apply for it and learn about other education services.

Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. A non-profit organization that offers community service programs to vets along with various scholarships.

Vets4Vets. A peer support organization that helps Iraq and Afghanistan veterans heal from psychological and emotional issues stemming from service and war by providing free weekend workshops. They also have a list of veteran resources.
